FAQs
Why is understanding the Building Code Act important for this exam?
The BCIN General Legal/Process exam evaluates your understanding of Ontario's building regulatory framework, including the Building Code Act, legal responsibilities, enforcement procedures, permits, inspections, and administrative requirements under the Ontario Building Code.
Who should take the BCIN General Legal exam?
This exam is particularly relevant to individuals pursuing qualification as municipal building officials, including Building Inspectors and Chief Building Officials. The examination you need depends on your intended role and Ontario's qualification requirements.
What is the difference between General Legal and Designer Legal?
General Legal/Process covers broader legal and enforcement responsibilities relevant to building officials, while Designer Legal/Process focuses on legal and administrative requirements applicable to designers. They are separate examinations with different syllabuses.
Can I take the General Legal exam without taking the House or Small Buildings exam first?
Yes. You can generally register for the General Legal examination without first passing House or Small Buildings. However, the examinations and qualifications required for a particular job or registration category depend on your intended role.
Is the BCIN General Legal exam open book?
Yes. The examination is open book, meaning you can consult permitted reference materials. However, the time limit makes it essential to know where relevant legal provisions are located and how to interpret them efficiently.
How long is the BCIN General Legal exam, and what score do I need to pass?
The exam typically consists of 70 multiple-choice questions, with 3 hours to complete it. The passing mark is 70%, which means you need at least 49 correct answers out of 70. Confirm the current format with the official examination provider before registering.
Does the General Legal exam include mathematical calculations?
The General Legal examination primarily focuses on legislation, interpretation, responsibilities, and administrative processes rather than technical building design calculations. Understanding how to apply legal requirements to practical situations is more important than advanced mathematics.
Can I take the BCIN General Legal exam online from home?
Yes. BCIN examinations are offered through online remote proctoring or an approved test centre. Remote examinations allow you to complete the exam from home or your office, provided you meet the technical, identification, and examination environment requirements.
How long does it take to prepare for the BCIN General Legal exam?
Yes. With consistent preparation, 36 days can provide enough time to build a strong understanding of the exam syllabus. Our structured study plan covers the Building Code Act, Ontario Building Code, practice questions, mock exams, and final revision. Your readiness will depend on your existing knowledge and daily study commitment.
What should I do if I keep getting BCIN practice questions wrong?
Don't just memorize the correct answers. Review the explanations, find the relevant Building Code Act or OBC reference, and understand why your answer was incorrect. Our study plan recommends adding at least 30 minutes of focused review whenever you answer 20% or more of a quiz incorrectly.
How should I prepare during the final week before my BCIN General Legal exam?
Focus on timed practice exams, reviewing incorrect answers, and strengthening your weakest topics. Our 36-day plan reserves the final six days for three full-length mock exams, additional Part 11 review, weak-topic revision, and a final review of important Code references.
How many attempts can I take for BCIN exam?
There is no strict limit, but you must pay the exam fee $150 each time.

Does the course teach how to find answers quickly in the Ontario Building Code?
Absolutely. One of the key focuses of this course is developing effective Code-navigation skills. You'll learn how to identify important keywords, locate relevant legal provisions, use CTRL + F effectively, and avoid wasting valuable exam time searching through unrelated sections.
