DIFFERENT QUESTIONS. DIFFERENT WAYS OF THINKING.
Discover Different Ways to Test Your Building Code Knowledge
Understanding the Ontario Building Code involves more than memorizing definitions or locating individual sentences. A practical question may require you to interpret information, compare conditions, examine a drawing or work through a calculation. Stonewood's preparation material uses a variety of practice formats to help develop these skills.
Multiple-Choice Questions
Evaluate several possible answers and identify the one best supported by the applicable building-code requirement. Similar-looking options encourage careful reading and code interpretation.
True/False and Yes/No Questions
Determine whether a statement is accurate by considering the requirement, applicable conditions and relevant exceptions. These exercises encourage precise understanding instead of relying on familiar terminology.
Scenario-Based Questions
Apply building-code requirements to practical residential design or construction situations. Understand the facts, identify what the question is asking and determine how the relevant provisions apply.
Image-Based Questions
Interpret diagrams, building sections and technical illustrations. Use dimensions and visual information to understand the conditions presented in the question.
Calculation Questions
Apply the appropriate method to solve questions involving measurements, areas, dimensions and relevant construction requirements. Develop the habit of checking assumptions and units before selecting an answer.
Connected Scenario Questions
Work through related questions based on a shared construction scenario. These exercises encourage you to understand the overall situation and apply information consistently to different questions.
Video lessons help make sense of the requirements; varied practice questions help you apply them. Both contribute to a more complete study approach.
The free quiz demonstrates selected formats. Stonewood's full preparation material provides broader question practice. The official examination may use a different presentation format from some of these learning exercises.
PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE, NOT JUST MEMORIZATION
What Makes BCIN House Practice Questions Challenging?
A building-code question may appear straightforward, but identifying the correct answer can require several steps. You may need to interpret building dimensions, distinguish between related technical terms, identify applicable code provisions or understand how several construction conditions affect compliance. For example, questions involving footings, stair dimensions, structural elements, fire separation or existing building conditions may require you to understand more than one piece of information before reaching a conclusion. Recognizing a code provision is useful. Understanding when and how it applies is what makes that knowledge practical.

Foundation Footing Projection
A 200 mm foundation wall is positioned centrally on a concrete strip footing with an overall width of 540 mm.
What is the minimum required ceiling height for the living room, measured over the required floor area?
A - 2.1 m
B - 2.3 m
C - 2.0 m
D - 2.4 m
Correct Answer: B - 2.3 m
Explanation:
OBC Reference: Table 9.5.3.1. Room Ceiling heights
Habitable rooms must meet minimum ceiling height requirements over the required floor area.
Under OBC Table 9.5.3.1, habitable rooms such as living rooms have two height requirements:
● Minimum 2300 mm ceiling height over at least 75% of the room area
● Minimum 2100 mm ceiling height at any point (including under beams, ducts, or bulkheads)
Practical Example:
Designing a Basement Second Suite
You are designing a legal second suite in a house basement with the following rooms:
● 1 Bedroom
● 1 Living room
● 1 Bathroom
● 1 Kitchen
● 1 Laundry room
● 1 Mechanical room
You refer to Table 9.5.3.1 to check minimum ceiling height requirements.
Living Room Height Calculation
● Total living room area: 20 m²
● Area affected by ducts and beams (bulkheads): 3 m²
● Clear unobstructed area: 17 m²
Step 1:
Check the 75% rule
● 75% of 20 m² = 15 m²
● Clear area available = 17 m²
✔️ Complies, because 17 m² (85%) has a ceiling height of at least 2300 mm
Step 2:
Check reduced height areas
● The remaining 3 m² under beams and ducts must have a minimum 2100 mm
clear height.
✔️ Complies if the bulkhead height is not less than 2100 mm
Why This Matters
If the ceiling height requirements are not met:
● The space cannot be approved as a legal second suite
● The designer must explore solutions such as:
-
Re-routing ductwork
-
Using flush-mounted beams
-
Reducing bulkhead depth
-
Underpinning or lowering the slab to increase overall height
Inspector / Designer / Plan Examiner Perspective
-
Designers must calculate and show compliance clearly on drawings
-
Plan examiners verify compliance during permit review
-
Building inspectors confirm actual constructed heights on site
Understanding how the 75% rule and minimum 2100 mm clearance work together is critical for basement second suites and is commonly tested in BCIN exams.
Relevant learning area: Ontario Building Code, Division B, Part 9: Housing and Small Buildings, Section 9.5: Design of Areas and Spaces, specifically Subsection 9.5.3: Ceiling Heights - Footings and Foundations.
Why This Approach Matters
The objective of question-based preparation is not simply to memorize an answer. It is to recognize the information provided, understand how the requirement works and develop a logical method for reaching the appropriate conclusion.
Stonewood's practice material is designed to encourage this approach through realistic scenarios and detailed explanations.
Understand the principle first. Practise applying it until your reasoning becomes more confident.
A SMARTER PATH TO BCIN HOUSE PREPARATION
Learn the Concepts. Practise the Questions.
Review and Improve.
The BCIN House examination requires both understanding and application. Watching lessons alone does not replace question practice, and memorizing practice answers does not replace learning the Ontario Building Code. A balanced study plan brings those skills together.
01 - Start with the Official House Syllabus
Identify which parts of the 2024 Ontario Building Code are included in the examination. Use the syllabus to focus your study time on the relevant provisions and referenced standards.
02 - Build Fundamentals Through Video Training
Learn how the Code is organized, how to recognize important terms, how to find relevant provisions and how common Part 9 concepts work. Stonewood's selfpaced House video lessons provide explanations and practical examples you can revisit.
03 - Learn a Reliable Exam Strategy
Practise Code navigation, search techniques, table interpretation, time management and a disciplined approach to difficult questions. Understanding the method can make your study sessions more productive.
04 - Put Your Learning into Practice
Start with this free demonstration, then use the full House practice exams to work through a broader question bank and timed mock examinations. Apply the concepts rather than relying on memorized answers.
05 - Review, Revisit and Repeat
Study the explanations for missed questions. When you find a weak topic, return to the relevant video lesson or code provision, then practise again until you understand the reasoning.
A useful study cycle: learn the principle, apply it to a question, understand the explanation and revisit anything unclear.
